Root-end surgery

For a problem at the tip of the root that retreatment can't reach.

Sometimes the trouble sits at the very tip of a root, or a canal can't be cleaned from above. In root-end surgery Dr. Abe opens the gum, cleans and seals the tip of the root under the microscope and closes the gum again.

What happens, step by step

Root-end surgery is usually one visit, with a check afterward. Your dentist does the final restoration.

  1. 01

    Step 1: Exam and scan

We look at your X-rays and, when we need one, a 3D scan, and tell you whether surgery fits.

  2. 02

    Step 2: Numbing

We numb the area and tell you what you'll feel, a pressure but no sharp pain, and that you can raise a hand to stop.

  3. 03

    Step 3: The root tip

We open the gum, clean and seal the root tip and close the gum with stitches.

  4. 04

    Step 4: After-care and a check

You get written after-care. We see you again to take out the stitches and look at the area.

Comfort, other options and after-care

  • Comfort

We numb the area, and we stop whenever you ask. The area is often swollen and sore for a few days.

  • Other options

Retreatment through the top of the tooth, or taking the tooth out. If you wait, an infection at the root tip can spread to the bone.

  • Risks and after-care

Swelling, bruising and soreness are common afterward. Rarely, an area stays tender or the problem comes back. You get written after-care, and a number to call.

  • How it's billed

You get the fee in writing before treatment. We bill your plan where we can, and give you a receipt where we can't.

Will I need stitches?

Yes, and we take them out at a check visit.

Can I go back to work?

Many people do the next day, but it depends on the work and how you feel. We tell you what to avoid.
